Background on the Audiology Assessment Arm (AAA)

The Audiology Assessment Arm (AAA) includes a subset of NHS II participants who responded to the Hearing Study Supplemental Questionnaire. These participants have undergone baseline and follow-up clinical hearing tests performed by licensed audiologists at one of 19 nationwide testing sites.

Clinical audiometric evaluations from participants in the Audiology Assessment Arm of the CHEARS hearing study will allow us to examine longitudinal changes in hearing thresholds. We will look at changes in threshold sensitivity between baseline and follow-up hearing tests and the relation to several potential risk factors.

We are investigating a wide range of potentially modifiable risk factors for hearing loss, including analgesic use, dietary factors, post-menopausal hormone use, and health conditions such as osteoporosis. Detection of earlier threshold changes will enable us to identify risk factors that are potentially modifiable earlier in the process of hearing decline, possibly elucidating strategies to prevent or delay the onset and/or progression of hearing loss.

If you were selected to participate in the AAA, please feel free to browse the Audiology Assessment Arm pages about the CHEARS Test Sites, Description of CHEARS Hearing Assessment, and AAA FAQs.
